In 1867, Spittal became a separate parish; but long before that, Christians have been showing God's love for others in this place. The name Spittal comes from the word hospital, and the one here existed here before the year 1234, caring for people with leprosy. We still seek to show God's care for people today as we live out our Christian faith. We join together on Sunday mornings to be strengthened by God to be able to do so, and to give Him our worship.
Whether you are a Spittler, a visitor, or you've moved into the area, you are welcome to come and join with us for worship at St John's Church. We meet on Sundays at different times Holy Communion or Morning Prayer (see service times for more details).
Then at 4pm we have TeaTime church for families with games, music, and much more to which all ages are welcome.
And we have great gardens, which have been developed with a quiet reflective space and areas for children to have fun and learn about nature and encourage wildlife. You are welcome to come into the garden at any time.
We are particularly grateful for the connection we have with the Mercers' Company and for their support and generosity as patrons.
We rely on the generosity of those in the community who want to support this church and her work. If you would like to join those supporters, please click here.
We are located on the Main Street in Lower Spittal, next to the First School, on the way to the promenade, (less than 2 miles from Berwick upon Tweed town centre). For the satnav, the postcode TD15 1RD will help, but you need to come down Billendean Road (if you are travelling from the A1, it is right at the roundabout where the sports centre is, down to the bottom of the hill and right onto the Main St), rather than Cow Road (which it might take you to). Please see the map below for details.
Parking is in local streets or there are car parking places near the sea front. Be careful not to park just around the corner from the church, as there are new restrictions for residents' parking and you might not see the sign which is immediately as you come onto the road.
